2010 Facts about the SEC Historical Society

Mission

The SEC Historical Society shares, preserves and advances knowledge of the history of financial regulation through its virtual museum and archive at www.sechistorical.org.

Founded in 1999, the Society is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

Independence from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission

The SEC Historical Society is independent of and separate from the SEC, and receives no funding from the public sector.  The virtual museum and archive is built and exhibited independent of any SEC oversight.

The Society’s unique virtual museum and archive opens the door to the history of financial regulation from the 20th century to the present, providing firsthand information on the regulation of the capital markets in the United States and the world.

The virtual museum and archive opened on June 1, 2002.  Its collection is expanded and enhanced each month.  The museum collection currently totals over 4,000 materials, including papers; photos; oral histories interviews; programs; film, radio and television documentaries; a timeline of regulatory developments against U.S. and world events from 1930 to the present; and galleries which facilitate search functions on specific subjects in regulatory history.   These materials are not available from other online sources.

The virtual museum and archive is free and accessible worldwide at all times.  Over 15,000 visitors use the museum monthly, including regulators from Federal, state, municipal and international agencies; law, accounting and financial services practitioners; academics and the press. Approximately 10% of visitors come from outside the United States.

Funding

The SEC Historical Society is funded solely by gifts and grants from individuals, corporations and foundations.  The Society receives no government funding.

The Society’s 2010 budget is $724,872.  $571,232 (80%) of the budget will be used for the development and outreach of the virtual museum and archive.

The Society currently maintains cash and investment reserves of $1.25 million. 

Governance and Management

The SEC Historical Society is governed by an independent Board of TrusteesSusan S. Coffey, AICPA, serves as the 2010-11 President.

Carla L. Rosati, CFRE has served as the Society’s Executive Director since 2001, and founded the virtual museum and archive at www.sechistorical.org in 2002.
