Meyer “Mike” Eisenberg died on September 4, 2026, at the age of 94. He served as Deputy General Counsel and Acting Director of the SEC’s Division of Investment Management. Mike served at the SEC twice: from 1959 to 1970 and again from 1998 to 2006, for a total of 19 years. A tireless advocate, he was widely known as a champion of investors, particularly in the mutual fund industry.
Mike loved his time at the SEC and working on a broad array of regulatory and enforcement issues. He contributed to major industry reforms including the Special Study of Securities Markets, the Mutual Fund Study, and the Investment Company Act Amendments of 1970, focusing on mutual fund fees, governance, fiduciary, and antitrust issues. He played key roles in landmark enforcement cases including Texas Gulf Sulphur and International Outsourcing Services.
Early in his career at the SEC, Mike served as Executive Assistant to Chairman Manual F. Cohen.
In its SEC December 6, 2005 press release SEC December 6, 2005 announcing Mike’s retirement, Chairman Christopher Cox described Mike’s impact on the SEC:
“For his work to protect investors over the years, and for helping to keep America’s capital markets the world’s ‘gold standard,’ Mike deserves the gratitude of all investors. As just one example, between the time Mike joined the SEC and today, the mutual fund industry grew from $40 billion to more than $8 trillion. Mike is one of the most admired and well-respected leaders of the SEC’s highly professional staff.”

In 1964, Mike and Dennis J. Lehr, also an SEC attorney, wrote Mutual Fund Retailing: Aspects of Market Structure and Dealer Operations.
In 2001, Mike participated in the Roundtable on the 1963 Special Study.
