In this oral history, Barry Barbash discusses his tenure as the director of the SEC’s Division of Investment Management from 1993 to 1998. He discusses reforms in the mutual fund industry and the evolution of mutual fund disclosures and shares what he learned early in his career at the Department of Labor and the SEC. He also reflects on hedge funds, exemptive authority under the Investment Company Act, ETFs, and post-1990s regulatory developments.
